A VPS, or virtual private server, is one physical server divided into several isolated virtual machines. Each one behaves like its own computer: its own operating system, its own reserved slice of CPU, RAM, and storage, and its own administrator login. You share the hardware with other customers, but not the software environment.
That puts a VPS between the two hosting extremes. Shared hosting gives you an account on a server the host runs for you. A dedicated server hands you an entire machine. A VPS gives you a machine of your own, carved virtually out of a bigger one, at a fraction of a dedicated server's price.

The apartment building analogy
Shared hosting is a room in a large, professionally managed house. You have your own key and your own space, but the kitchen, plumbing, and electricity are common. If a housemate throws a party, you hear it. In hosting terms, when another site on the server burns through CPU, your pages can slow down. Good hosts contain this with technology like CloudLinux, but the ceiling is real and it is not yours to raise.
A VPS is an apartment in the same building. You still share the land and the structure, which is what keeps the price reasonable, but you have your own walls, your own electricity meter, and your own front door. You can renovate the interior however you like, and your neighbours' habits mostly cannot reach you.

How the virtual part actually works
Software called a hypervisor (KVM is the most common on Linux hosts) splits one physical server into independent virtual machines. Each VPS boots a full operating system of its own, usually a Linux distribution you choose, and the hypervisor enforces the resource allocations: the CPU cores and RAM promised to your VPS are reserved for it, not pooled with everyone else's.
Isolation is the whole point. A crashed process, a full disk, or a hacked application inside a neighbouring VPS stays inside that VPS. From your side of the wall, you see a normal server: you can reboot it, reinstall it, or break it, and nobody else on the machine notices.
Shared vs VPS vs dedicated at a glance

What root access actually means
Root is the administrator account of a Linux system, and it is the single biggest practical difference between a VPS and shared hosting. With root you can install any software, open any network port, run services that stay alive around the clock, tune the database server's memory settings, add firewall rules, and pick your exact operating system and software versions.
Concretely, that unlocks things shared hosting cannot do: Docker containers, a WebSocket or game server, a custom background daemon, a mail server, or a niche stack your host has never heard of. If your project is a website, you may never need any of that. If your project is an application, root is often the feature you are really buying.
The flip side is that root cuts both ways. On a VPS, security patches, firewall configuration, service monitoring, and the 2 a.m. outage are yours unless you pay for a managed service. Shared hosting quietly does all of this for you, which is easy to forget until it stops being done.
Managed vs unmanaged VPS
An unmanaged VPS is a bare virtual machine and an IP address; everything above the hypervisor is your job. A managed VPS adds the host's team for setup, patching, and troubleshooting, and often a control panel like cPanel so it feels closer to shared hosting. Managed costs more in money, unmanaged costs more in your time and risk. Be honest with yourself about which currency you would rather spend, because an unpatched, unmonitored VPS is worse than good shared hosting, not better.
Who actually needs a VPS
You likely need one if you run long-lived custom services, need Docker or specific system software, have contractual or compliance reasons to keep your environment fully isolated, or have measured your site hitting shared hosting's resource limits repeatedly. Is a VPS automatically faster than shared hosting?

Can I run WordPress on a VPS?
